Downton Abbey

I knew it was just a matter of time...
I'm not even sure why it took me SO long to getting around to watching it.
But I knew I'd love it.
Even before I watched episode 1 of the first season.
AND DISAPPOINTED I WAS NOT!
I've always enjoyed period dramas - Merchant Ivory was always a favourite production company - as I'm an absolute believer in the power of a good story.
I've always believed that a good story transcends time and culture... which is why I'm such a Shakespeare fan.
One of the things I LOVE about Downton Abbey (after viewing episode 8 of the third season), apart from the very fine acting and great characterisation, is the introduction of the new instruments of modernity. It's a reminder of how far we've come in a very short period of time.  I'm also enjoying hearing their versions of liberalism... flaunting the rules and authority but still not being over-the-vulgar, which seems to be what stands for liberalism today!
Anyway, off my soapbox... Downton Abbey is a jolly good story, very well acted, and enticing for those that want more from a programme than wanton profanity, sex and nudity!
